Novelista inglés. Fue funcionario de correos en Inglaterra e Irlanda desde 1834 a 1867. En 1844 comenzó a escribir. Llegó a publicar 47 novelas, las que producía a razón de mil palabras por hora, normalmente escritas antes del desayuno. Sus obras más entrañables y populares son seis novelas interconectadas, ambientadas todas ellas en un imaginario condado británico, Barsetshire, y que se destacan por su atmósfera envolvente y por la profusión de personajes memorables; Las torres de Barchester (1857) y La última crónica de Barset son dos de ellas. De la serie novelas de tema político que giran en torno al personaje Plantagenet Palliser, se destaca la incisiva sátira de The Eustace Diamonds [Los diamantes de Eustaquio] (1872). He Knew He Was Right [Sabía que estaba en lo cierto] (1869), en tanto, evidencia una gran penetración psicológica. The Way We Live Now [Así vivimos ahora] (1875), con su visión irónica de la clase alta victoriana, es una de las más estimadas.
